Green Olympics In Beijing 2005 - BOCOG's environmental efforts (2)

Update:2007-05-22 16:10:07

   2. Engineering environmental management

   2.1 Implementing the "Environmental Guidelines"

In 2005, BOCOG developed the Environmental Guidelines for Renovated Venues and the Environmental Guidelines for Olympic Overlays, reviewed whether the renovated venues and overlays have met all the environmental requirements, and promoted the application of environmental technologies in the venues under construction.

To ensure the athletes access to favorable environment during their stay in Beijing, BOCOG organized the assessment of the environmental noise impact in the Olympic Village during the Games period. Many solutions were proposed in response to the assessment results.

2.2 Establishing a sub-station to monitor the air quality

Air quality monitor

On Oct. 28, 2005, Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau set up a sub-station in the Olympic Green to monitor the air quality. Thus far, the sub-station is used to monitor the impact of venue construction on air and provide scientific foundation for the environmental management of the construction sites. During the Games period, it will be used to monitor and manage the air quality in the central area of the Olympic Green.

   2.3 Building Green Construction sites

Based on cooperation with Beijing 2008 Project Construction Headquarters, BOCOG implemented the Green Construction Guidelines for Olympic Projects in the Olympic construction sites and launched Selection of Excellent Construction Sites for Green Olympics. In 2005, the National Stadium, the National Swimming Centre, Wukesong Indoor Stadium, the Olympic Village, Digital Beijing Building, Beichen Xilu Beiyan were awarded the title of Excellent Construction Sites.

   2.4 Environmental demonstration

   (1) Waste steel scrap roadbed

During the construction, the Olympic Village utilized 8,000 tons of waste steel scraps produced by the Capital Iron & Steel Group to construct roadbed. 40,000 tons of waste steel scraps were used as the anti-floated materials in the underground structure of the National Indoor Stadium. The aforementioned measures achieved reutilization of resources, saved natural sand and stone particle materials, and partly eliminated the influences of the "steel scrap hill" of Capital Iron & Steel Group on surrounding environment.

   (2) Environment-safe well lid

In the Olympic Village, cement glass fiber composite materials were applied to make some of the temporary rainwater and wastewater well lids, an environment-safe well lid instead of cast iron well lid, so the non-renewable ironstone resources were economized.

   (3) Solar energy bathrooms for builders

In the builders' life area of the Olympic Village, a solar energy hot water system of 140 square meters was installed to supply hot water so that the builders could bathe and get refreshed.

   (4) Solar energy lighting devices

In the office area , life area for workers and on the roads along the construction area in the Olympic Village, solar energy turf lamp, solar energy court lamp and solar energy street lamp were installed respectively to provide night lighting for the Olympic Village, beautify the environment and save the power.

2.5 Cleaning and solid waste management

The cleaning and maintenance of the competition venues, and collection, transportation and final disposal of solid wastes are important work that guarantees the successful delivery of a high level Olympic Games.

In 2005, BOCOG compiled the Concept of Operations for Cleaning and Waste Management of the Olympic Venues, developed policies and procedures related to venue cleaning and waste management to guarantee effective and rational treatment of all wastes produced and reduce the impact of Olympics on the environment. The clean Olympic venues and activity areas will motivate the audience to behave in a more environmental friendly manner.
