(BEIJING, March 23) -- The diesel-driven vehicles of some public sector institutions such as postal service vehicles and sanitary trucks will be equipped with diesel particulate filters (DPF) in an attempt to reduce the particulate pollution in the city, Beijing Evening Post reported.
Besides carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen and sulfur, the smoke emitted by diesel-driven vehicles also contains a large amount of particles less than 2.5 microns in size. These particles, also known as PM2.5, can penetrate into the deepest recesses of our lungs.
So far, 100 vehicles have been fitted with the new device, a number that is expected to grow to thousands within the year, according to an official of the Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau. He warned that the stricter requirement will be gradually applied to all diesel-driven vehicles in the capital city.
