(BEIJING, March 24) -- Thanks to a new van-portable laser remote sensing system, vehicles that do not meet emission standards will be detected much more efficiently than in the past, said an official.
Feng Yuqiao, an official of the Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau, said, "(with the new device) it takes only 0.7 seconds to display the numerical value of the emission of carbon monoxide and the number plate of the car on the computer.
"Whether exhaust emissions are up to standard is clear at a glance."
This was not the case with the traditional, time-consuming method, which made it necessary for the traffic police to stop the vehicles first.
According to Feng, ten such vans will be stationed in Beijing's major streets in 2007.
