6. Initiatives under the Theme of Green Olympics
6.1 On the nationwide voluntary Tree-planting Day

On the morning of April 2, some 400 BOCOG staff members and their families joined hands with Dongcheng District government to initiate a voluntary tree planting activity named "Hosting Green Olympics and Building Ecological City" in Ditan Park. BOCOG Executive Vice Presidents Liu Jingmin, Jiang Xiaoyu, Li Binghua, Yang Shu'an, and some famous athletes Li Lingwei, Liu Xia, Zhang Guozheng, Li Yansong and Jiao Xingquan attended the tree-planting activity.

All the BOCOG staff members directly involved in the "Green Olympics" practice in an effort to call for all Beijing citizens to beautify the capital, protect the environment and build Beijing into an ecological city characterized by harmony between human being and nature.
6.2 "Green Dreams, Colorful Olympics" painting contest

From June 5 to Sept. 24, 2005, BOCOG Environmental Activity Department (EAD) and Cultural Activity Department (CAD) jointly organized a painting contest named "Green Dreams, Colorful Olympics" for the middle and primary school students in Beijing. More than 2000 students from nearly 100 schools, including international schools, project hope schools, schools for children of migrant workers in Beijing and special education schools, took part in the contest.
The children handed in waste newspaper they collected in exchange for recycled paper and painting brushes. The lectures on "Green Olympics, Green Action" helped them better understand the concept of "Green Olympics". They depicted the Green Olympics in their hearts and their dreams for the beautiful future in their paintings.
Over 200 excellent paintings were selected from the activity. A collection of excellent paintings was published and an itinerant exhibition was organized afterwards.
6.3 The making of "Green Map of Beijing"

On May 27, 2005, Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau and BOCOG EAD formally launched the green map-marking campaign. Beijing citizens enthusiastically participated in the activity by marking the environmental facilities, cultural relics and natural landscapes in the area where they are living, working and studying, thus completing China's first ever city map marked with environmental facilities.
The Green Map of Beijing will visually depict the latest progress that Beijing has made in pollution control, ecological conservation, transport infrastructure development, Olympic venue construction and cultural facilities. It is not only able to reflect the urban construction and communicate "Green Olympics" information, but also able to advocate the concept of healthy life.
6.4 Seminar on Beijing Green Olympics environmental technology and development
In 2005, BOCOG Environmental Activity Department and the Technological Standard Department of the State Environment Protection Administration co-hosted the Seminar on Beijing Green Olympics Environmental Technology and Development. The participants discussed in depth the environmental protection policies and technologies applicable for the environment improvement in Beijing and brainstormed on how to reduce pollution to the maximum extent, improve the ecological environment and promote the sustainable development and provided feasible environmental technologies and useful suggestions for the successful delivery of Beijing 2008 Olympics.
Some 150 experts and scholars active in environmental protection and related research and engineering fields attended the seminar. They brought forward some constructive proposals and measures for the implementation of "Green Olympics".
