(BEIJING, July 5) -- State Councilor Chen Zhili toured the sites of the Olympic venues in Beijing's university area on June 30 and July 4, stressing the need to ensure the quality of the projects.
Chen, who is also first vice-president of the Beijing organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), said that the decision made by the central government to locate part of the Olympic venues in the university area was an important one. The move, she said, can help promote sport and spread the Olympic spirit in the universities and colleges of Beijing and raise the level of competitive sports in China..
Chen urged the universities to pay attention to the quality of the Olympic projects, to the safety on the construction sites, to the build-up and training of the operation teams, to the environmental protection around the Olympic venues, as well as to mass participation in the preparatory work for the Olympic Games.
A total of 31 Olympic competition venues are based in Beijing, with 6 of them in the university area, including Beijing University of aeronautics and Astronautics Gymnasium (weightlifting), Peking University Gymnasium (table tennis), China Agriculture University Gymnasium (wrestling), University of Science and Technology Beijing Gymnasium (judo, taekwondo), Capital Indoor Stadium (volleyball) and Beijing Institute of Technology Stadium (volleyball).
