Beijing focuses on transport, air quality

Update:2007-07-12 17:15:29

(BEIJING, July 12) -- Beijing is endeavoring to honor its promise to provide safe, smooth, punctual and convenient transport services for the 2008 Olympic Games, according to a meeting of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

The meeting, chaired by committee secretary and BOCOG president Liu Qi on Wednesday also called for an effort to make the city's air quality meet the national standards and those of the World Health Organization.

Summing up what has been done, the meeting noted that the city has speeded up construction of Olympics-related and urban transportation facilities, intensified service training, while progress has been made in elaborating Games-time transport policies and rules, as well as command and management systems.

The city has also taken effective measures to monitor pollutants and has improved air quality for eight years in a row.

However, the meeting was of the opinion that more needed to be done to facilitate traffic in transportation hubs and in the areas around the Olympic venues and hotels.

The officials called for strict measures to cut emissions and control air pollutants, as well as for emergency measures to deal with adverse weather conditions.
