(BEIJING, July 11) -- Workers started to lay sand produced in China on Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground, a venue for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
The first batch of one-ton sand from Dongfang City of Hainan Province arrived on June 29. After modifications made according to the advice of Canadian specialist Todd Knapton, the sand began to enter the 20,000 square-meter ground
The procedure requires that half of the ground, measuring 10,000 square meters, should be laid to meet the needs of the 2007 FIVB Beach Volleyball Women's Challenger from August 13-19, 2007 .The work will take about five days and the venue will be inaugurated around July 25, an official said.
The Challenger is one of the 26 "Good Luck Beijing" sports events to be held this year. What the organizers of the Beijing Olympics want to see is whether the operational mode used in the events is effective for the next year's Olympiad.
